APRIL TOTALS

What a month! I started my Full Ironman training regimen through a program called Training Peaks. I selected the 80/20 endurance option. This program help athletes implement the 80/20 rule of intensity balance. Benefits include reduced fatigue and injury risk, improved fitness, increased motivation, and better race results. I’m now strictly focusing on my event training which means less strength and more functional race day training, Swimming, Riding and Running…a lot! I’ve also tried a few tweaks to my supplementation regimen as well as by focusing on my recovery, in particular, SLEEP!

APRIL TOTALS:

Push-ups-2950

Bike-327.35 mi

Run-76.12 mi

Swim-18,115yds

Changes: Less strength training, basically, fewer days focusing on weights. I still incorporate strength days but focus more on legs, core, and back. These all translate well to swimming, biking and running.

-More swimming, biking and running! That’s 90% of all my training.

-More sleep. I’ve been monitoring my sleep using my apple watch and a cool sleep app. I ordered my Oura Ring for event greater and more in-depth data. I’m still waiting for it to arrive. I’m still experimenting with what works best for me but my sleep has improved a lot in the past few weeks, I’ll detail this later in another blog.

Growth Areas: All three areas of training have improved. I’m faster and stronger in each discipline. I’m most focused on my bike since this is my weakest event. Since I have a new bike so there is no excuse to not go outside and ride it! A 1hr ride now feels like a 30min ride did last month.

Areas for Improvement: Continue to get stronger and faster on the bike. I need to increase my average watt output.

-Swimming needs to get faster

-Working on my breathing and lowering my average heart rate in each discipline.

What’s next: On May 4th, I compete in the St. George Half Ironman in Utah. I’m really looking forward to this race to see how much I have improved. Look back next month for updates on my race and training.

Thank you,

Greg
